An immediate overview

Status colors roll up from tasks to projects, so the project list alone shows where attention is needed.

Called-off work remains visible in red, together with its rationale. Notes retain their earlier versions.

Three colors, four states

You set the status of tasks. Andon consolidates the rest.

Initialized
White
Not started yet.

Every new task starts white. A project made up of white tasks has simply not started.

NTR
Green · nothing to report
Work is proceeding normally.

Green does not mean “done”: on a production line, a green light indicates that the station is operating, not that it has stopped.

Blocked
Orange
A temporary blocker.

The most important state day to day: a single orange task is enough to turn its parent task and its project orange.

Called off
Red
This approach is not viable.

Set aside with its rationale, to be revisited in a more suitable context. Red is a record, not a failure.

A practical example

A year later, the rationale is still on record.

Approach A, an in-place upgrade, corrupted the test data. It turned orange during the analysis, then red with its rationale recorded. Approach B took over, and the project returned to green.

For the next migration, a search for “in-place upgrade” retrieves Approach A. You review why it was discontinued, check whether the vendor has fixed ticket 1182, and reach a decision in minutes.

A deleted task can no longer inform future decisions.

Installer Portable (ZIP)

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. No administrator rights required.

Installation on Windows
01Installer. Run AndonSetup.exe. Andon installs for the current user account only, so no administrator rights are requested. Andon starts once the installation is complete.
02Portable version. Extract the ZIP archive to any location and run Andon.UI.exe. No installation is required; data is nevertheless stored in the folder below, not alongside the program.
Data location
%AppData%\Andon
Both versions use this folder: databases, the backups subfolder, plugin data and the crash.log file. To open it, paste the path into the File Explorer address bar. Because attachments are stored inside the databases, copying this folder backs up everything.
Note editor. It relies on the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime, which is already present on most Windows 10 and 11 computers. If it is missing, the Notes tab provides a download link.
Updates. Preferences › Check for Updates, for both the installer and the portable version.
Uninstallation. Settings › Apps › Andon › Uninstall. The data folder is retained in case of a later reinstallation.

01Install the required libraries (Debian, Ubuntu and derivative distributions):

From Ubuntu 24.04 onwards, the FUSE package is named libfuse2t64. The Chromium engine used by the editor is bundled.
02AppImage. Make the file executable, then run it:

03tar.gz archive, which does not require FUSE: extract it, then run Andon.UI from the extracted folder:

Data location
~/.config/Andon
Databases, backups, plugin data and crash.log. Copying this folder backs up everything.
Updates. The AppImage updates itself from Preferences › Check for Updates. The tar.gz archive does not update automatically: download the new version from this page.
Uninstallation. Delete the AppImage file or the archive folder. The data folder is retained.

Adds a Diagram tab to every task, backed by an embedded draw.io editor. Each task keeps its own diagram, saved automatically as you edit.

Consult the I Ching oracle from any task. Casts a hexagram using the traditional 3-coin method and saves the reading — glyph, name, and judgment — directly into the task’s notes.
