Chapter 07

Notes

Every task has its own notes, written in a rich text editor on the Notes tab. Notes are where the context lives: decisions, reasons, links, code and screenshots.

Highlights

Select some text, click the highlight button and pick yellow, pink or green. To remove a highlight, select the text and click the eraser in the same picker, or right-click the highlighted text and choose Remove highlight.

A simple convention helps: for example, yellow for decisions, pink for open questions and green for confirmed facts.

Tables and images

Click Table to insert a 3x3 table, then click inside it and use +Row and +Col to grow it.

To add an image, click Img and choose a file, or paste an image straight from the clipboard, such as a screenshot. Images are stored inside the note itself, so they travel with it and appear in its history.

Code blocks

Click Code block to insert one. Code blocks are syntax highlighted, and each has:

  • a language picker, to choose how the code is highlighted (or plain text)
  • a Copy code button
  • an Edit button, which opens the code in a larger editor with column selection

In the Edit code block window, click OK to keep your changes or Cancel to discard them.

Task links let you jump between related work, even across projects.

  • Select some text and click ๐Ÿ”— Task, or right-click and choose Link selection to Task. Pick the task in the list, which shows each task's current color.
  • With no text selected, the button inserts the chosen task's name as a link.
  • Click a link to open that task. Right-click it and choose Remove task link to remove it.

A link keeps its text when its task is deleted or its project archived, but clicking it then opens nothing. Restore the project, or remove the link.

Find and replace

Press Ctrl+F to open the search bar above the note. Press Enter for the next match and Shift+Enter for the previous one. Options let you match case, match whole words or use a regular expression.

Press Ctrl+H to open the bar ready to replace, then use Replace All.

Saving

You never need to save by hand. About three seconds after you stop typing, Andon saves the note. The status at the top right of the note shows Unsaved changes..., then Auto-saved, and the toolbar shows the last save after the task's name, such as "Auto-saved โ€” Minor edit".

Pressing Ctrl+S (or clicking Save) creates a checkpoint. It is saved like any other version but marked SAVED in the history and is never removed by the automatic clean-up (see chapter 8). Use it before big changes, or to mark a milestone.

Fullscreen

Click the Fullscreen editor button in the toolbar to give the note the whole window, which is useful for long writing sessions. Click Exit Fullscreen to return.

Import and export

  • Import Markdown: brings a .md file into the note.
  • Export as Markdown: saves the note as a .md file. The file name defaults to the task's name.
  • Import HTML: brings in HTML content, for example from a web page or another tool.

Spell-check

Spell-check is off by default. The toolbar button switches it on or off for the note you are editing, and Preferences sets the default for all notes.
