Projects
A project groups related tasks and shows one color that sums them up. This chapter covers creating and managing projects, and the different ways to look at them.
Create a project
- On the project list, click + New Project.
- Pick an emoji. It identifies the project at a glance, especially in the icon view.
- Enter a name and, if you like, a short description.
- Click Create.
Andon creates the project with a first task already in it, so it is never empty. Rename that task to your first real step.
Naming tips. Keep names short and specific: "Server migration 2026" is easier to find later than "Infra". Use the description for the goal, in one line.
Edit, archive or delete
Each project has a menu with three actions:
- Edit Project: change the emoji, name or description, and set Markdown folders for syncing (see chapter 9).
- Archive: move the project out of the active list, keeping everything. Andon asks for confirmation. Tasks it shares with another project stay in that project (chapter 12).
- Delete Project: remove the project and everything only it holds, permanently. Andon asks for confirmation. Tasks it shares with another project stay there (chapter 12).
To open the menu in the detail or title list, hover over the project's row and click the ⋮ button that appears. In the icon view, right-click the project's square. Archive and Delete Project are unavailable while the project's Markdown files are syncing.
Prefer archiving to deleting. An archived project still turns up in search, with all its red tasks and their lessons.
The three views
The buttons next to the search box switch between three views. Press Ctrl+G to cycle through them.
| View | Shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Detail list | Status color, name and description | Reading what each project is about |
| Icon view (the Chocolate Box) | One square per project in its status color, showing its emoji; hover for name, description and last update | A morning check of many projects |
| Title list | Compact names only | Long lists |
Sorting
The sort menu orders projects by Last Updated or by Created, newest or oldest first, or by Manual Order. Projects can't be dragged into place, so Manual Order keeps the order in which they were created. Andon remembers your choice.
Sorting by last update is a good default: projects you are actively working on stay at the top, and forgotten ones sink to the bottom, which is a hint to archive them.
Opening a project
Click a project to open it. The toolbar takes on the project's status color, so you always know its state while working inside it. As long as Andon stays open, a project reopens on the last task and tab you used in it. After a restart, only the project, task and tab you were last using are remembered.
Moving around
Andon keeps a navigation history, like a web browser:
- Alt+Left goes back and Alt+Right goes forward.
- The back and forward buttons in the toolbar do the same.
- On Windows, the back and forward buttons on your mouse work too.
The breadcrumb
When a task is open, the bar at the top of the window shows where you are: the project's name, then each parent task, then the current task, each with its status dot.
- Click a task's name to open it, or the project's name to go back to the project list.
- Click a › to open a list of the other tasks at that level and jump to one. The › after the current task lists its child tasks.
- On a Kanban board's tab, the breadcrumb ends with the selected card; click it to open the card.
A long path scrolls sideways.
